Xanthan Gum ~ my panic attack.

So in my interest to remove the chance of giving toxic items to the dogs...........led me down a path.
In the last bit we have been overdoing the "protecting" of Morgain and what food we give her.  The life changing events of Shanners still haunt us.
Before my surgery I had noticed Xanthan Gum was listed on a label of a food we eat.  This scared me as in my mind I had thought it was toxic to Dogs.  After tearing our fridge apart and reading all of the labels to see what was in everything, realizing I am going to do more things from scratch lol.  I was of to the studio to research so I could post on here what I had found.
Turns out Xanthan Gum is NOT TOXIC to dogs BUT Xylitol is.

Xylitol,

What is Xylitol?
"Xylitol is an all natural sweetener that looks and tastes like sugar. Xylitol is naturally occurring in many of the fruits and vegetables we eat on a daily basis. Once extracted and processed it yields a white, crystalline granule that can be used in any recipe that calls for sugar. It’s good for your teeth, stabilizes insulin and hormone levels, promotes good health and has none of the negative side effects of white sugar or artificial sweeteners. It contains only 2.4 calories per gram and is slowly absorbed as a complex carbohydrate. Xylitol looks like sugar, tastes like sugar, and is the same sweetness as sugar – making it the ideal natural sugar replacement."
From Xylitol Canada, more information can be found at www.xylitolcanada.com

The key thing is Xylitol is Toxic to dogs, granted the Xylitol website does have a snippet on Safe for Pets under FQA.
When in the hunt for what products contained Xylitol, I found it difficult to find a "list" of foods containing the ingredient.  What I did find was broad categories of foods & baked good ingredients that may have it.
Over on EHow www.ehow.com/list_5910709_food-products-contain-xylitol.html is an article on Food products.  Since they did the research it is better to hop on over and take a look.

The lesson I have learned is to read ALL labels of ingredients before giving the product to your dog.  I am smiling as after reading the ingredients maybe we should do the same for ourselves.
Have a great day reading labels.
